Conversations are key to breast cancer awareness and prevention

by Wellness Champions, Concordia Plans

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. – Proverbs 3:6

Show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness by being someone’s accountability partner. Discuss how to support one another in the journey to good health, along with what steps can be taken to prevent and detect this disease that impacts so many.

Did you know …

  • In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%.
  • Although breast cancer is much more common in women, breast cancer affects men, too. According to the American Cancer Society, 2,790 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024.
  • The cause isn’t 100% known, but certain lifestyle choices are known to increase risk, such as smoking and drinking alcohol in excess, as well as lack of exercise.

Although the prevalence of breast cancer in the U.S. is high, so are the survival rates – thanks to regular screenings, self-exams and improved treatment options.

Early detection saves lives

  • Perform regular self-examinations.
  • 40% of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump.
  • Talk to your provider about when you should have a mammogram.
  • If you are age 40+, your preventive mammogram is covered at 100% on the Concordia Health Plan (CHP).
  • PLUS, if you schedule your mammogram through Healthcare Bluebook, you will be guided to a low-cost and quality provider AND receive an incentive VISA card for doing so.
